A terrifying high-speed chase ended in a fiery crash on U.S. Highway 1 in Martin County, Florida, killing the wrong-way driver and sending four people to the hospital — including two young children.
It happened just before 5 p.m. when a driver was spotted traveling northbound in the southbound lanes near Riviera Beach. A U.S. Border Patrol agent first noticed the vehicle and tried to stop it, alerting multiple agencies as the chase pushed further north.
What followed was 16 miles of pure chaos.
Sheriff John Budensiek said deputies watched helplessly as the driver barreled down the wrong side of the highway at over 100 mph, weaving past oncoming traffic. Jupiter Police managed to deflate one of the tires using stop sticks on a bridge — but it wasn’t enough. At one point, the suspect even tried to run over an officer before speeding away.
The nightmare ended in Hobe Sound, near Jonathan Dickinson State Park, when the vehicle slammed into two cars and burst into flames. The driver was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene despite CPR attempts by first responders.
The crash didn’t just destroy cars — it shattered families.
A 6-year-old child suffered internal injuries and was airlifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center. A 4-year-old was rushed by ambulance. Two adults were also hurt. Miraculously, all four are expected to survive.
“Considering how bad this crash was — they will survive and hopefully make a full recovery,” Sheriff Budensiek said.
Perhaps most unsettling — investigators still don’t know who the driver was. The vehicle’s plates were registered to an elderly South Florida woman, and fingerprint analysis has yet to identify the suspect.
The case remains under active investigation.
