Pennsylvania teacher killed by her own husband — students and community are heartbroken

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania — A community is grieving the sudden and violent loss of one of its most beloved teachers after a domestic dispute turned deadly inside a family home last week.

Taryn Morgan, 45, was fatally shot by her husband, Dennis Morgan, on May 21 at their Jefferson Township home in Dauphin County, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Dennis Morgan then turned the gun on himself in what police are calling an apparent murder-suicide attempt.

Taryn was pronounced dead at the scene. Dennis, 46, was reported as not expected to survive his self-inflicted gunshot wound. As of Monday night, authorities had not released an update on his condition.

A Teacher Who Was ‘More Than an Educator’

Taryn Morgan taught agriculture and served as an advisor for the Upper Dauphin Area Future Farmers of America and Agricultural Program at the Upper Dauphin Area School District.

To her students, she was far more than a classroom instructor.

“She was a mentor, a role model, and a constant source of passion and positivity for so many students and community members,” the FFA and agriculture program wrote in a Facebook post following her death.

“Her love for agriculture and her dedication to her students left a lasting impact that will never be forgotten.”

Taryn had spent more than 20 years in education. She is survived by three children.

A district Facebook post from November 2024 — shared when she was hired — described her as someone who loved to read, bake, and landscape in her free time.

“She loves all foods except tomatoes and mushrooms,” the post noted, a small personal detail that now feels like a tender reminder of the person behind the title.

A Community That Refused to Stay Silent

In the days following her death, the Upper Dauphin community did what communities do when words fall short — they showed up.

On Saturday, the FFA and agriculture program hosted a plant sale to support Taryn Morgan’s family.

Her greenhouse, which she had tended with the same care she gave her students, was full heading into the summer. By the end of the sale, it was empty.

“Every single plant found a new home with loving members of our community,” the program shared on Facebook Sunday.

“What started as a simple effort turned into something so much bigger. It became a reflection of just how many lives Mrs. Morgan touched.”
