It was just past midnight in a quiet Concord, North Carolina neighborhood when a father’s worst nightmare unfolded — and then turned fatal.
Lester Jones, 47, was inside his home on Bedlington Drive Northwest when he realized his 16-year-old daughter was being physically attacked by her boyfriend. He didn’t hesitate. He stepped in to stop it. Moments later, he was dead.
The boyfriend — Keshaun Tirrell Degraffenreid, just 17 years old — had been arguing with his girlfriend when the fight turned violent. According to a police arrest warrant, Degraffenreid punched the girl directly in the face. When Jones intervened to protect his daughter, the teenager opened fire.
Degraffenreid fired multiple rounds. Jones took the bullets meant to silence a father’s love. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His daughter — the very person he died protecting — was also struck by gunfire and rushed to a nearby hospital. Police have not released an update on her condition.

When officers arrived, responding to a reported assault with injury, they found a father and daughter both bleeding from gunshot wounds in the same home. Degraffenreid had already fled on foot — but didn’t get far. Police tracked him to a nearby street and arrested him after a brief foot chase.
He is now being charged as an adult — facing first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, misdemeanor domestic violence, and resisting officers. His first court appearance was Wednesday. He is due back in court on June 18.
What Happens Next: With the case moving to adult court and Degraffenreid facing a first-degree murder charge, prosecutors are pushing for maximum accountability. The teenager who walked into a home and killed a father protecting his child could spend the rest of his life in prison. Concord is about 25 miles northeast of Charlotte.
