Motorcyclist set on fire in hit-and-run crash — and the driver just drove away

REDLANDS, California — A 73-year-old man is dead after a hit-and-run crash set him on fire along a busy highway — and the driver who caused it simply drove away.

It happened on the evening of June 9 on Highway 38, between Amethyst and Garnet streets, just after 5:30 p.m.

Redlands police were called to the scene after the motorcyclist collided with another vehicle.

The impact ejected him from his bike.

Fuel leak turned a crash into a fire

When the motorcycle hit the ground, fuel began leaking from the damaged bike.

It ignited.

Within moments, both the motorcycle and the 73-year-old man were on fire on the side of Highway 38.

The crash was violent. The aftermath was worse.

Bystanders jumped in when the driver ran

While the suspect sped away from the scene, strangers did the opposite — they ran toward the victim.

Bystanders rushed in to help extinguish the flames. Someone in the crowd stepped up and performed CPR on the man while others worked to put out the fire.

They kept going until paramedics arrived.

Despite their efforts, the victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. He has been identified only as a Redlands resident. His name has not been publicly released.

The suspect is still out there

The driver who caused this never stopped.

Witnesses said the car — described as a gold or tan-colored four-door sedan — was last seen heading east on Highway 38 after the crash.

The vehicle had also sustained significant damage to the driver’s side, witnesses reported.

Police believe someone knows something about this car or its occupants.

Redlands police are actively searching for the suspect and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
