NMSP Asks Public for Help Identifying Vehicle in Fatal Farmington Hit-and-Run

Farmington, New Mexico — New Mexico State Police are asking for the public’s assistance as investigators continue working to identify the vehicle and driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred earlier this month in San Juan County.

Fatal Crash Reported Along Highway 371

According to authorities, the crash happened on January 2 during the early morning hours along New Mexico Highway 371 near County Road 8501 in the Farmington area. State police responded to the scene at approximately 1:47 a.m. after receiving reports of a serious incident on the roadway.

When officers arrived, they discovered a deceased adult female lying near the northbound shoulder of the highway. Emergency responders pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

Timeline of the Incident

Investigators believe the crash occurred sometime between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m., roughly an hour window before law enforcement arrived. During that period, traffic along the rural stretch of Highway 371 would have been light, which may have allowed the suspect vehicle to leave the area without immediately being noticed.

State police have not yet released the identity of the victim, pending notification of next of kin.

Suspect Vehicle Description Released

Based on evidence collected at the scene, investigators believe the suspect vehicle is a 2021 or 2022 GMC Canyon midsize pickup truck. The vehicle’s color is currently unknown, but police say it likely sustained noticeable damage during the collision.

According to New Mexico State Police, the truck is believed to have:

  • Damage to the driver’s side headlight
  • Damage to the driver’s side fog light
  • Possible damage to the grille
  • Possible damage to the front bumper

Authorities say the damage may be significant enough that someone close to the driver may have noticed changes to the vehicle shortly after the incident.

Hit-and-Run Investigation Ongoing

Investigators have classified the incident as a fatal hit-and-run, meaning the driver failed to stop, render aid, or contact emergency services after the collision. Leaving the scene of a fatal crash is considered a serious criminal offense under New Mexico law and can carry severe penalties if the suspect is identified and charged.

State police continue to analyze physical evidence from the roadway, including debris and impact patterns, to narrow down the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Public Assistance Requested by State Police

New Mexico State Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash, saw a damaged GMC Canyon, or has information about a pickup truck that suddenly appeared damaged around the time of the incident to come forward.

Investigators are especially interested in tips from:

  • Drivers who traveled on Highway 371 between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m.
  • Residents who may have heard or seen unusual activity along the roadway
  • Repair shops that may have recently worked on a GMC Canyon with front-end or headlight damage
  • Anyone who knows a driver who owns a GMC Canyon matching the description and avoided driving it after January 2

Even small details, police say, could help piece together what happened and identify the responsible party.

How to Submit Information

Anyone with information related to the crash is asked to contact New Mexico State Police directly at 505-841-9256. Callers may provide tips anonymously.

Authorities stress that community cooperation is often critical in hit-and-run cases, particularly when crashes occur during late-night hours with limited witnesses.

Community Safety Reminder

State police also used the opportunity to remind drivers of the importance of staying alert on rural highways, especially at night. Reduced visibility, higher speeds, and fewer vehicles on the road can increase the risk of serious or fatal crashes. Drivers are urged to slow down, watch for pedestrians, and report any collisions immediately.

Investigation Continues

The investigation remains active as troopers work to identify both the vehicle and the driver involved. Police say updates will be released if new information becomes available or if charges are filed.

Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to come forward to help bring closure to the victim’s family and ensure accountability.
