19-Year-Old Killed in Canyon County Crash After Subaru Collides With Semi on Highway 20/26

CANYON COUNTY, Idaho – A 19-year-old man lost his life Tuesday morning following a serious crash involving a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck in Canyon County. Idaho State Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, which temporarily shut down a major roadway west of Caldwell.

According to authorities, the crash occurred at approximately 9:06 a.m. near the intersection of Wanger Road and U.S. Highway 20/26. The young driver was traveling in a white Subaru Outback when the incident took place.

Crash Happened After Vehicle Entered Intersection

Preliminary reports indicate that the 19-year-old had stopped at a stop sign on Wanger Road before attempting to cross or enter U.S. Highway 20/26. As the Subaru moved into the intersection, it was struck by a blue Peterbilt semi-truck driven by a 50-year-old man.

Investigators say the collision occurred after the Subaru failed to yield the right of way to the oncoming semi. Due to the size and weight difference between the two vehicles, the impact caused severe damage to the passenger vehicle.

Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, but the 19-year-old driver was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash. Officials confirmed that he was the sole occupant of the Subaru at the time of the collision.

Road Closure and Emergency Response

The crash led to the temporary closure of U.S. Highway 20/26 for several hours while crews worked to clear debris and conduct an on-scene investigation. Traffic in the area was rerouted, causing delays for morning commuters.

Multiple agencies responded to assist at the scene, including the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office, Canyon County Paramedics, and Caldwell Fire Department. Emergency personnel secured the area, provided medical support, and ensured the safe removal of the damaged vehicles.

Authorities have not reported any serious injuries to the driver of the semi-truck.

Investigation Ongoing

Idaho State Police continue to examine the details of the crash, including vehicle positioning, speed, and roadway conditions at the time of impact. Investigators will review evidence from the scene to determine all contributing factors.

Intersections involving highways can be particularly dangerous due to high traffic speeds and limited reaction time. Law enforcement officials routinely remind drivers to exercise caution when crossing major roadways and to ensure that traffic is fully clear before entering an intersection.

The name of the deceased has not been publicly released pending notification of next of kin.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information is encouraged to contact authorities as the investigation remains active.

Officials urge drivers in Canyon County and surrounding areas to remain alert, obey traffic signals and signs, and approach highway intersections with heightened awareness to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
