Gun Theft Suspect Sparks Wild Pittsburgh Chase — Crashes, Jumps Into River in Dramatic Escape Attempt

A man wanted for allegedly stealing firearms from a vehicle in Downtown Pittsburgh triggered a dramatic multi-agency pursuit on Wednesday — ending with a crash near Station Square and a desperate jump into the Monongahela River.

Attempted Traffic Stop Turns Into High-Speed Escape

According to authorities, officers attempted to pull over a vehicle around 4 p.m. near Wood Street and Forbes Avenue. The driver was suspected of stealing guns from a parked car inside a Downtown garage earlier that day.

Instead of stopping, the suspect accelerated away, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit. Public safety officials later terminated the initial chase for safety reasons.

Sheriff’s Deputies Continue Pursuit Across Fort Pitt Bridge

Deputies with the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office later located the vehicle and resumed the pursuit. The chase crossed the Fort Pitt Bridge and continued onto West Carson Street.

Authorities said the driver eventually lost control and crashed into a pole near Station Square, bringing the vehicle to a halt.

River Jump in Desperate Attempt to Escape

After the crash, the suspect fled on foot before leaping into the Monongahela River in what appeared to be a last-ditch attempt to evade capture.

Emergency crews responded quickly. Witnesses saw divers entering the water as part of the response. The man later pulled himself out of the river and was taken into custody.

He was placed on a stretcher and transported by ambulance following the incident.

Multiple Charges Expected

Officials have not yet released the suspect’s identity. However, authorities confirmed he is facing multiple charges related to the incident. No additional details were provided Wednesday.

The chaotic sequence — from alleged gun theft to a bridge chase and river escape — brought heavy police presence to one of Pittsburgh’s busiest corridors and left bystanders stunned at the unfolding drama.
