Maryland Tragedy: High-Speed BMW Crash Claims Two Young Lives in Gaithersburg

A devastating early-morning crash in Gaithersburg has left two families mourning after a high-performance BMW lost control, flipped multiple times, and tore through a busy intersection before landing in a drainage trench.

The violent collision occurred shortly after 3 a.m. on Sunday, March 22, at the intersection of Norbeck Road and East Gude Drive.

Authorities confirmed that Abraham D. Huracaya Del Aguila, 24, of Silver Spring, and Alexander J. Medrano Cangalaya, 24, of Rockville, were pronounced dead at the scene. Both were passengers in the vehicle.

What Investigators Know So Far

Preliminary findings indicate the gray 2025 BMW M8 was traveling eastbound when the driver suddenly lost control. Investigators say the vehicle entered a yaw — a rapid sideways rotation — before crossing the center median and veering into oncoming lanes.

The crash sequence intensified within seconds.

The BMW struck multiple curbs, destroyed pedestrian crossing signals, and surged through the intersection at high speed. It then collided with several trees before overturning and coming to rest inside a drainage trench along the westbound side of the roadway.

The extent of the destruction suggests significant force and momentum at the time of impact.

Rescue Efforts at the Scene

Emergency crews arrived to find three men trapped inside the severely damaged sports car. First responders worked quickly to extract the occupants from the wreckage.

The driver was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries that authorities later described as non-life-threatening. The two passengers, however, succumbed to their injuries at the scene despite lifesaving efforts.

Debris from the crash was scattered across the intersection, and portions of the roadway were closed for several hours while investigators documented the scene and cleared the wreckage.

Ongoing Investigation

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit are leading the investigation. Officials are analyzing vehicle data, roadway conditions, and other forensic evidence to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Investigators have not yet released information regarding speed, impairment, or other potential contributing factors. Authorities caution that a full reconstruction of the incident may take weeks or even months to complete.

Community Impact

The tragedy has shaken the local community and reignited conversations about high-performance vehicles, late-night driving risks, and roadway safety.

The intersection where the crash occurred is a well-traveled corridor, particularly during daytime hours. While traffic is lighter in the early morning, the reduced visibility and higher travel speeds at that time can increase the severity of collisions.

Friends and family members of the victims have begun sharing tributes, remembering the two young men for their personalities, ambitions, and close bonds with loved ones.

As investigators continue working to understand what led to the catastrophic loss of control, two families are left grappling with unimaginable grief — a stark reminder of how quickly lives can change in a matter of seconds on the road.
