Lafayette, Indiana: A disturbing incident at a public park in Lafayette, Indiana has led to the arrest of a 31-year-old woman accused of pulling a gun on children and making violent threats. The घटना unfolded Sunday evening at Columbian Park, where families had gathered, turning what should have been a normal day into a frightening experience for several young witnesses.
According to the Lafayette Police Department, officers responded around 5:55 p.m. after receiving reports of an armed individual at the park. When authorities arrived, they spoke with multiple children between the ages of 7 and 14, who described a woman matching a specific appearance—wearing a pink bonnet and blue shirt—approaching them with a firearm.
What Happened at the Playground
Children told police that the woman allegedly pulled a handgun from a fanny pack and began brandishing it in a threatening manner. Several of them reported that she made alarming statements, including threats to shoot and even blow up the park. In one particularly serious moment, she allegedly told a child she would “light him up,” causing panic among the group.
The situation escalated quickly, with the children fearing for their safety until the woman eventually left the park.
Police Response and Arrest
Investigators were able to track the suspect using a license plate provided during the initial report. Within about 20 minutes, officers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Thompson Street and Lincoln Street—roughly half a mile from the park.
The suspect, identified as Ashley Nicole Maxwell, was found driving with six children inside the vehicle. Police confirmed her driver’s license was suspended at the time.
During the stop, officers reported detecting the smell of marijuana, and Maxwell allegedly admitted to having a joint in her possession. She was taken into custody at the scene.
Charges and Investigation Findings
Maxwell now faces multiple serious charges, including intimidation with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, criminal recklessness, and unlawful carrying of a handgun. Additional charges include possession of marijuana and driving while suspended.
As the investigation continued, police executed a search warrant at her residence. Authorities reportedly discovered ammunition and firearm-related items inside. In the backyard, officers found a handgun along with magazines and other accessories, allegedly hidden after Maxwell contacted someone to conceal the weapon.
Community Concern and Ongoing Case
The incident has raised concerns among local families about safety in public spaces, especially areas meant for children. While no physical injuries were reported, the emotional impact on the young witnesses is significant.
Maxwell is currently being held at the Tippecanoe County Jail on a bond set at $200,000 surety and $20,000 cash. She is scheduled to appear in court on July 17 as the case moves forward.
Authorities have not indicated any further threats to the public, but the investigation remains active.
