California Mother Murdered Her Own 9-Year-Old Daughter During Road Trip — Body Found in Utah Desert Two Months Later

In one of the most chilling cases to emerge in recent memory, a California mother has been charged with first-degree murder after the body of her 9-year-old daughter was discovered in a remote area of Utah — more than two months after the little girl mysteriously disappeared.

Nine-year-old Melodee Buzzard of Lompoc, California, was last seen on October 9, 2025, during a multi-day road trip with her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, 40. Melodee never returned home, and school administrators reported her disappearance in mid-October after she failed to show up for days.

What followed was a disturbing investigation. Authorities discovered that Ashlee had changed the license plate on her rental car at least once during the trip, and that both she and Melodee had been wearing wigs. Ashlee was largely uncooperative with investigators throughout.

On December 6, 2025, two people taking photographs in a remote area of Wayne County, Utah, discovered a decomposed body. After forensic analysis, the remains were positively identified as Melodee on December 22.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown announced that significant forensic evidence pointed directly to Ashlee as the killer. She was arrested on December 23, 2025, and booked on first-degree murder charges. She is being held without bail.

“Maternal filicide is rare and always difficult to comprehend,” Sheriff Brown said. “This level of criminal activity is particularly shocking given the calculated, cold-blooded and criminally sophisticated premeditation involved.”

Melodee’s extended family has been left devastated. Her father died when she was a baby — and now the only parent she had stands accused of taking her life. The investigation is ongoing.
