Excavation work at a Lake County home briefly triggered a multi-agency response before officials confirmed the remains are historical in origin.
Human bones discovered Tuesday during excavation work near Big Star Lake in Lake County, Michigan, are not connected to any crime, authorities confirmed.
Deputies were called to the 16000–17000 block of South Star Lake Drive at around 3:58 p.m. after workers uncovered what appeared to be human remains. The scene was immediately secured as the medical examiner’s office responded, along with a forensic anthropologist.
After an on-site examination, officials determined the bones are ancestral — meaning they are historical in origin and unrelated to any recent death or ongoing investigation.
The area was temporarily closed to allow for a full review but has since reopened to the public. Officials confirmed there is no threat to public safety.
The remains were collected and transferred to the anthropologist’s custody for further handling in line with established protocols.
