She Was Just Sitting in Her Car. Then Bullets Flew — and an 86-Year-Old Grandmother Paid the Price

An 86-year-old woman had no part in the conflict. She wasn’t the target. She was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

And now she’s in the hospital.

Commerce City police responded Monday to a shooting near E. 60th Avenue and Monaco Street, where an elderly woman sitting in a parked car was struck by gunfire during what appeared to be a dispute between two suspects.

Authorities quickly issued a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents as officers swarmed the area in search of the two shooters.

One suspect didn’t get far.

He fled the scene on foot — and was taken into custody within minutes of the shooting.

The second suspect, however, managed to escape. He drove away in a vehicle, and as of now, remains at large. Police have not released a description of the car.

The shelter-in-place order was lifted roughly an hour after it was issued, once officers confirmed the immediate threat in the area had been contained.

The victim’s condition has not been released, but she was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Investigators have not confirmed what led to the shooting or whether the two suspects knew each other.

The search for the second suspect is ongoing.
