SAYLORSBURG, Pennsylvania — A community is grieving after a desperate all-day search for a missing 5-year-old boy ended in heartbreak on Sunday afternoon.

Ajani Jermanie Samuel, who had autism, was found dead in a body of water in Monroe County at around 4:30 p.m., according to CBS affiliate WYOU.

He had been missing for hours.

A Family’s Worst Morning

The search began around 9 a.m. on Sunday when Ajani was reported missing from his home near the 100 block of Rose Drive in Chestnuthill Township.

Neighbors, first responders, and rescue teams mobilized quickly — but the boy had already slipped away unnoticed.

For families of children with autism, moments like this are a known and terrifying risk. Children on the spectrum often wander without any sense of danger, drawn toward water, roads, or open spaces with no awareness of the threat.

Rescue Teams Searched for Hours

Pennsylvania Mountain Rescue’s wilderness squad was called to Saylorsburg to assist in the search.

K-9 units worked alongside crews throughout the day, covering ground in the area surrounding Ajani’s home.

It was those K-9 teams that ultimately led authorities to the boy’s body. The exact location where he was found has not been officially confirmed.

“Never the Outcome Anyone Wants”

Pennsylvania Mountain Rescue shared the difficult news on Facebook Sunday evening.

“Our hearts go out to his family, friends and community members affected by today’s events,” the post read. “This is never the outcome that anyone wants to be a part of.”

The words reflect what every first responder, volunteer, and neighbor felt after a day of desperate searching ended without the result anyone had prayed for.

A Community Left to Grieve

Ajani was just five years old.

He had his whole life ahead of him — and in a matter of hours on a Sunday morning, that life was gone.

Monroe County authorities have not released additional information about the circumstances of his death or whether any investigation is ongoing.

His family is now left to face an unimaginable loss — the kind no parent, no community, should ever have to carry.

If you or someone you know has a child who wanders, local organizations offer safety resources including GPS tracking devices and door alert systems designed specifically for families of children with autism.

This story is devastating. Share your thoughts and condolences for Ajani’s family in the comments — let them know they are not alone in this grief.
