Patient Airlifted After Sleeping Driver Slams Into Ambulance on US-131, Flipping It Into a Ditch

A Life EMS ambulance flipped onto its roof near Wayland after a pickup truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and rear-ended it — sending the patient inside to the hospital by helicopter.

Three people were hospitalized Tuesday evening after a dramatic crash on US-131 near Wayland Township left an ambulance overturned in a roadside ditch, according to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office.

The Life EMS unit was transporting a patient north toward Grand Rapids just before 7 p.m. when a pickup truck driver behind it fell asleep — crashing into the back of the rig. The ambulance lost control, veered off the road, and rolled over, landing on its roof.

The patient being treated in the back suffered serious injuries and had to be airlifted to the hospital by AeroMed helicopter.

The ambulance driver and the EMT who was attending to the patient were both taken to the hospital by a second ambulance. Authorities said their injuries were not life-threatening.

Northbound US-131 near 128th Avenue was shut down following the crash. Drivers were asked to avoid the area while the sheriff’s office investigated the scene.
