12-Year-Old Boy Fighting for His Life Two Weeks After E-Bike Crash — and His Community Wants Answers

A 12-year-old boy from Carmel Valley remains in critical condition two weeks after his electric bike collided with a Tesla, and the crash is forcing his community to ask hard questions about e-bike safety for kids.

Mark Maldonado, a student at Ashley Falls Elementary School, was riding westbound in the bike lane on Del Mar Heights Road when he attempted a left turn onto Old Carmel Valley Road. His e-bike collided with a Tesla driven by a 64-year-old driver who was not injured. Maldonado suffered multiple brain bleeds, head trauma, and a broken collarbone. As of this report, he remains in critical condition.

Police have not filed charges in connection with the crash. The stretch of road where the collision occurred has four lanes of traffic and a posted speed limit of 45 miles per hour.

The incident has rattled neighbors and parents in the tight-knit Carmel Valley community. “It’s horrible for the driver and for the kid who is on the bike,” said Leora Goldfarb, a parent in the area.

Goldfarb said risky riding habits among young cyclists are a growing concern. She frequently sees minors riding without helmets, doubling up on single bikes, and ignoring traffic signals.

Neighbor John Perlman, who spoke near Ashley Falls Park, said the crash has made him more alert when sharing the road. “They are at their own risk, I guess, if they are going to drive crazy and run stop signs,” he said.

Both residents are now calling for stronger oversight. Goldfarb compared e-bikes to motorcycles, saying riders should be required to have a license. Perlman echoed that sentiment, pushing for a strict age limit and real enforcement.

E-bikes have become a common sight across San Diego communities, but residents say rules around their use — especially for minors — remain inconsistent and poorly enforced.

A family friend who launched an online fundraising campaign for the Maldonado family said the family is grateful for the outpouring of support from the community as they face a difficult road ahead.
