According to officials, the shooting took place inside the family’s apartment while both parents were asleep during the afternoon. The two young children were left unsupervised in their bedroom, where a loaded handgun was kept inside a dresser drawer.
Investigators said the 3-year-old child was aware of the gun’s location. He retrieved the firearm and began playing with it before accidentally pulling the trigger, fatally shooting his younger brother, identified as Khalil Adams.
Emergency responders rushed the toddler to a nearby hospital, but doctors later pronounced him dead.
Parents’ Actions and Investigation
Authorities said the children’s father, Tashaun Adams, woke up after hearing the gunshot and ran to the room, finding his son unresponsive on the floor. He later told investigators he immediately realized the severity of the situation.
The children’s mother, Selena Farrell, fled the scene shortly after the incident and was arrested days later at a hotel. According to police, she stated she believed the child would not survive and intended to attend his funeral.
