Amaya Dixon, 21, has been indicted on two counts of felony murder after police found her twin toddler sons unresponsive in a bathtub on April 17. Neither child survived.
A 21-year-old Virginia mother is now facing felony murder charges after authorities say she drowned her twin 17-month-old boys in an apartment bathtub last month — a tragedy that has left an entire community shaken.
Amaya Dixon was taken into custody Thursday after a grand jury in Richmond indicted her on two counts of felony murder and two counts of child neglect, court records show.
“Officers arrived to find the 17-month-old twins suffering from apparent drowning injuries while in a bathtub.”
Richmond Police Department officers responded to a 911 call reporting two injured children at an apartment on the 1000 block of German School Road at approximately 8:39 p.m. on April 17.
Emergency personnel rushed both boys to a local hospital. One twin was pronounced dead that same night. His brother fought for several more hours before passing away the following day.
Investigators have not yet publicly disclosed a motive. The Major Crimes Unit is leading the ongoing investigation.
Court records also reveal that at the time of the alleged killings, Dixon was already facing a separate set of criminal charges in neighboring Chesterfield County — including credit card theft, grand larceny, fraud, financially exploiting vulnerable adults, and possessing stolen property with intent to sell. Those charges were filed in December 2025.
Authorities have not confirmed whether anyone else was present in the apartment at the time of the incident.
