Alabama's 85° heat isn't cooling off — and it's about to make your week a lot stormier

North Alabama woke up to wet roads and gray skies Monday morning — and meteorologists say residents shouldn’t expect sunshine anytime soon. A stalled weather boundary across the Deep South is funneling warm, humid Gulf air directly into the Tennessee Valley, setting the stage for a week of repeated thunderstorm development across Huntsville, Madison, Decatur, and surrounding communities.

The National Weather Service has issued an elevated storm outlook through at least Thursday, with rain chances persisting each afternoon and evening. But it’s the middle of the week that carries the most risk.

Peak window: Tuesday & Wednesday

Storms become most widespread during peak daytime heating. Isolated cells could produce gusty winds, brief hail, and torrential downpours capable of flooding low-lying roads. Widespread severe weather is not anticipated, but strong individual storms cannot be ruled out.

What makes this setup unusual is the heat. Despite persistent rain, temperatures are pushing into the lower-to-mid 80s — creating an early-summer mugginess that is itself fueling storm energy. That feedback loop means each afternoon essentially resets the storm clock, with new cells capable of developing wherever moisture and instability collide.

Drivers along Interstate 565, Memorial Parkway, and Highway 72 face the greatest disruption risk. Visibility can drop quickly when heavy rain bands move through, and repeated storm tracks over the same area raise the risk of localized flooding on roads with poor drainage. Commuters on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons should build in extra travel time or monitor conditions before heading out.

Looking beyond the immediate storm threat, long-range forecasts show above-normal temperatures expanding deeper into the Southeast heading into early June. Storm chances are expected to ease later next week, but the warm, active pattern looks locked in for now.
