NEW HAVEN, Connecticut — A Memorial Day celebration turned frightening Monday evening when a driver allegedly drunk behind the wheel plowed into two children, an adult, and a food truck in one of the city’s busiest waterfront areas.
The crash happened around 6:45 p.m. on the 300 block of Long Wharf Drive — a stretch that draws families and visitors, especially on holiday weekends.
What Police Say Happened
According to New Haven police, the driver lost control and struck three people before the vehicle came to a stop.
Two of the victims were children.
The driver did not stop there. Police say the vehicle also hit several parked cars and a food truck before the scene was secured.
All three people who were struck — including both children — suffered minor injuries. Emergency crews responded to the scene and treated the victims.
Driver Arrested, Identity Not Yet Released
Officers arrested the driver at the scene.
Police charged the individual with DUI along with additional motor vehicle violations. The suspect’s identity has not been released publicly at this time.
It is unclear whether any passengers were in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
A Holiday Weekend Crash That Could Have Been Far Worse
Long Wharf Drive sees heavy foot traffic during Memorial Day weekend, with families, food vendors, and visitors gathering along the waterfront.
The fact that two children were among those struck — on a day meant for community celebration — has rattled locals who frequent the area.
Police have not yet said whether alcohol levels have been formally tested or when the suspect will appear in court. The investigation is ongoing.
This is a developing story. Updates will be added as new information becomes available from New Haven police.
