Neighbor found her body. Now a Grayson woman is charged with murder on her own street

GRAYSON, Georgia — A quiet Sunday morning in a Grayson neighborhood turned into a crime scene after a neighbor walked over to check on a woman — and found her dead inside her own home.

Gwinnett County police were called to the 300 block of Wilkerson Way at 8:42 a.m. on Sunday. What they found inside launched a murder investigation that has left an otherwise peaceful community struggling to make sense of the tragedy.

A Neighbor Made the Discovery

The call came in after a neighbor discovered the body inside the residence.

Officers arrived quickly and confirmed the woman had been shot. Detectives remained on scene for several hours, methodically working through the home.

During the investigation, police were seen carrying out several large bags from inside the house. A white vehicle parked directly in front of the home was also towed away as part of the inquiry.

Victim and Suspect Both From Grayson

On Monday morning, police released the names of both the victim and the suspect.

The woman killed was identified as 44-year-old Sharell Canty of Grayson.

The suspect, 48-year-old Stephany Byrom — also of Grayson — was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. Byrom now faces serious charges including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during a felony.

Motive Still Unknown

Police have said the shooting appears to be domestic in nature, but have not yet disclosed the relationship between Canty and Byrom.

No motive has been officially confirmed as the investigation continues.

“We Knew Something Really Bad Had Happened”

For the people who live on Wilkerson Way, Sunday was unlike anything they had experienced in their neighborhood.

One resident came home to find the street blocked by an ambulance and multiple police cruisers, with yellow crime scene tape stretched across the front of the home.

They described watching a woman pull up in a white car and step out — only to be told what had happened.

“She started to cry,” the neighbor recalled. “The ambulance left in silence as well, so we knew that someone, something really bad had happened.”

Residents say the area is typically calm and family-oriented — a place where children play outside, visit local parks, and walk to a nearby ice cream parlor without a second thought.

The shooting has left many on the block shaken and searching for answers.

Gwinnett County police have not announced any additional arrests at this time. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
