A Body Under a Blanket, a Road in Pennsylvania, and a Suspect 2,700 Miles Away — What We Know

A Body Under a Blanket, a Road in Pennsylvania, and a Suspect 2,700 Miles Away — What We Know

On the morning of May 23, a passerby near state Route 441 in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County, made a grim discovery — a man’s body, concealed beneath a blanket, left on the shoulder of the road. What followed was a swift cross-country investigation that ended in the arrest of a 25-year-old man nearly 3,000 miles away in California.

Pennsylvania State Police confirmed the discovery in a news release, describing the victim as a male with dark brown hair, facial hair, and brown eyes, believed to be between his 30s and 40s. He stood 5-foot-10 and weighed approximately 210 pounds, and was wearing a black Oakland Raiders shirt at the time he was found. Despite these details, the victim has not been publicly identified.

“Authorities moved quickly — within days of the body’s discovery, a suspect was in custody in another state.”

Ilia Romanchenko, of Roseville, California, was arrested on Sunday and now faces a serious list of criminal charges in connection with the case. Court records list four charges against him:

  • Criminal homicide
  • Abuse of a corpse
  • Possession of an instrument of crime
  • Tampering with / fabricating physical evidence

Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo confirmed that Romanchenko was taken into custody out of state and is currently awaiting extradition back to Pennsylvania, where he will face his preliminary arraignment. Authorities have not yet disclosed how he was identified as the suspect, or what connection he had to the victim.

Key details surrounding the case remain tightly held. Investigators have not released information about how the victim died, the circumstances that brought Romanchenko — a California resident — to rural Pennsylvania, or the nature of any relationship between the two men. The investigation is described as ongoing.

The charges against Romanchenko paint a disturbing picture: beyond the homicide allegation itself, charges of tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse suggest investigators believe efforts were made to conceal or interfere with the scene — or with the victim’s body — before or after death.
