Father and Toddler Airlifted from 10,000-Foot Sierra Peak After Mountain Bike Trip Goes Wrong

A man mountain biking with his 18-month-old son had to be rescued by helicopter after the pair became stranded near Freel Peak in the Lake Tahoe area, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office said.

The incident happened May 21 when the father rode into the Freel Peak area — at elevations exceeding 10,000 feet — only to find snow blocking the trail. Attempting to turn back, he pushed through the snow on foot, but quickly became exhausted.

With darkness approaching and no equipment to handle the conditions overnight, the man grew increasingly concerned — especially after his toddler began showing signs of extreme discomfort, raising fears the child might need medical attention.

Rescue crews responded quickly. Two El Dorado Search and Rescue volunteers were flown to the peak, hiked down to the stranded pair, and both were airlifted to the South Lake Tahoe airport, where first responders provided treatment.

The Sheriff’s Office called it “a team effort” and thanked all participating agencies.

Officials used the incident as a reminder for outdoor adventurers: “For everyone who adventures in El Dorado County, remember to be prepared and stay safe.”
