Ohio storm warning: Heavy rain, flooding, and damaging winds expected today — are you in the danger zone?

COLUMBUS, Ohio — If you live in central or southern Ohio, today is not the day to ignore the weather app.

Heavy rain and strong thunderstorms are sweeping across the state on Wednesday, May 27, and forecasters are warning that conditions could turn dangerous before the evening is over.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington says multiple rounds of storms will roll through Ohio throughout the day — and in some spots, the rain will not let up.

The Worst Window Is This Afternoon

The highest-risk period runs from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

That is when conditions could become favorable for storms strong enough to produce damaging winds — right in the middle of the evening commute.

If you are planning to drive during that stretch, pay close attention to weather alerts before you leave.

3 Inches of Rain or More in Some Areas

Forecasters say some locations could pick up 3 inches of rain or more — especially where storms slow down or repeatedly pass over the same area.

That is a significant amount in a short period, and the ground is already saturated from earlier rainfall.

That means creeks, streams, and low-lying areas will fill up fast. Roads can flood quickly, sometimes with little to no warning.

These Cities Are in the Risk Zone

Portions of central and southern Ohio are under a Level 1 marginal severe weather risk, including:

  • Columbus
  • Cincinnati
  • Dayton
  • Wilmington
  • Chillicothe
  • Lancaster

If you are in or near any of these areas, keep weather alerts active on your phone throughout the afternoon and evening.

What Drivers Need to Know Right Now

The evening commute could be rough.

Heavy rain, reduced visibility, and water-covered roads are all possible during the 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. window. Officials are urging motorists to avoid flooded roadways entirely — even if the water looks shallow.

Flooded roads are the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the U.S. It is never worth the risk.

If you see water on the road, turn around. Do not drive through it.

When Will It End?

The unsettled weather is expected to continue into tonight before conditions gradually begin to ease on Thursday.

Until then, stay weather-aware, keep your phone charged, and check local alerts before heading out.
