Florida Man Charged After Christmas Day Beating and Attempted Robbery in Downtown Knoxville

Knoxville — A 30-year-old Florida man is facing multiple felony charges after an alleged Christmas Day assault and attempted robbery in downtown Knoxville, according to a warrant report obtained by WVLT News.

Incident Reported on Christmas Day Evening

The incident occurred around 5:12 p.m. on Christmas Day, near the intersection of Gay Street and Depot Avenue, a busy area in downtown Knoxville. Police said the victim, Raymond Goldsen, reported that he was approached from behind by Joseph Griffin, who allegedly struck him with a metal luggage handle.

According to the warrant report, Griffin continued to strike Goldsen repeatedly in the head and face, causing the victim to fall to the ground during a struggle.

Victim Says Suspect Demanded Money

Police documentation states that Goldsen attempted to defend himself, leading to a physical altercation between the two men. During the struggle, officers say Griffin made his intent clear.

“I just want your money,” Griffin allegedly told the victim during the assault.

Both individuals reportedly fell to the ground as the confrontation escalated, prompting bystanders and officers to respond.

Suspect Located Near Downtown Parking Area

Following the reported attack, Knoxville police were able to track Griffin to a parking lot near the Regas Building, located a short distance from the original scene. Officers detained Griffin without further incident.

During a search, police said Griffin was found in possession of drug-related items, including:

  • Syringes
  • Drug pipes
  • Suspected marijuana

Evidence Tampering Allegations

The warrant report also states that Griffin allegedly discarded syringes at the Gay Street intersection while leaving the scene. Investigators believe this action supports an additional charge related to tampering with evidence.

Officers recovered several items believed to be connected to the assault and subsequent attempted escape.

Charges Filed Against the Suspect

Joseph Griffin now faces multiple criminal charges, including:

  • Attempted aggravated robbery
  • Drug possession
  • Tampering with evidence
  • Evading arrest

Authorities confirmed that Griffin is originally from Florida, though it remains unclear how long he had been in the Knoxville area prior to the incident.

Ongoing Investigation

Police have not released additional details regarding Griffin’s criminal history or whether the victim required hospitalization following the attack. The case remains under investigation, and prosecutors are expected to review the charges in the coming days.

Officials have not indicated whether surveillance footage from nearby businesses contributed to the arrest.

Public Safety Reminder

Knoxville police continue to urge residents and visitors to remain alert, especially during holiday periods when pedestrian traffic increases in entertainment districts. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has additional information is encouraged to contact local authorities.

As the legal process moves forward, Griffin will appear in court to face the charges stemming from the Christmas Day incident.
