Philadelphia, PA – Police are investigating a troubling series of violent robberies that have occurred within blocks of one another in South Philadelphia over the past several weeks. Authorities say five separate incidents, all involving groups of three suspects, took place between mid-January and mid-February during late-night and early-morning hours.
Residents say the back-to-back attacks have left the neighborhood shaken.
“It’s scary. You have to watch. You have to be aware,” said neighbor Anthony Sylvester, describing the growing sense of concern in the area.
Timeline of the Reported Robberies
The first robbery occurred around 1:45 a.m. on January 17 in the 900 block of Washington Avenue. According to police, three young men pushed a victim off his electric bicycle and stole it. The victim was left suffering pain in his hand and knee.
A second robbery happened just after midnight on February 3 in the 1100 block of Carpenter Street. Investigators say three men punched and kicked the victim, causing what may have been a concussion, before taking cash.
Surveillance video from the area reportedly showed three masked individuals walking along Carpenter Street shortly before the attack.
Later that same night, around 11:05 p.m. on February 2, another robbery occurred in the 1100 block of South 10th Street. Police say three suspects punched and kicked a victim before stealing both money and an electric bicycle.
Escalation and Use of a Weapon
A fourth robbery was reported around 12:03 a.m. on February 11 in the 1100 block of Annin Street. In that incident, three men took a wallet containing credit cards and cash. Authorities say one suspect was riding a scooter, and another displayed a handgun during the robbery.
The most recent attack occurred around 12:48 a.m. on February 12 near the intersection of 10th and Reed streets. Police report that three men pushed the victim from a bicycle, then punched and kicked the individual until he lost consciousness. The victim also suffered what is believed to be a possible concussion. The suspects fled with a wallet and cash.
Pattern and Community Concerns
Police are examining similarities across the cases, including the number of suspects involved, the use of physical force, and the targeting of individuals riding bicycles during late-night hours.
Residents say they are increasingly cautious.
“It’s obviously hugely concerning,” said South Philadelphia resident Joe Manning. “We’re out here all the time. We walk our puppy late at night and never had an issue like this. We’re trying to band together as a neighborhood to work with police to put a stop to it.”
Community members are discussing ways to improve awareness, share surveillance footage, and coordinate with authorities to prevent further incidents.
Ongoing Investigation
Investigators are urging anyone with information about the robberies to contact South Detectives at 215-686-3013 or dial 911 immediately.
Police have not yet announced arrests in connection with the incidents. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine whether the same suspects are responsible for all five robberies.
