2 Dead, Several Hurt After Early-Morning Collision on Kennedy Expressway in Chicago

Two people lost their lives and three others were injured following a serious crash early Sunday morning on the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago’s West Loop.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:46 a.m. on the southbound lanes of the Kennedy near Randolph Street. Authorities responded to reports of a two-vehicle collision.

According to officials, one vehicle was stopped in the traffic lanes for reasons that remain unclear when it was struck by another vehicle traveling in the same direction.

Five individuals were inside the stationary vehicle at the time of the crash, while one person was in the second vehicle. All six occupants sustained injuries. Two of the five people from the stopped vehicle were pronounced dead.

Following the collision, inbound lanes of the Kennedy Expressway were closed around 1:58 a.m. to allow investigators to examine the scene and clear the wreckage.

Traffic restrictions remained in place for several hours before all lanes were fully reopened at approximately 7:30 a.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
