A heartbreaking new development has emerged in the tragic death of 14-year-old Riley Jordan in Arlington. Investigators say the gun used in the fatal shooting was taken from a relative’s locked safe by a 17-year-old, raising serious questions about firearm access and teen safety.
What Happened the Night Riley Died
Riley Jordan was shot on Saturday, February 21, inside a home in the 4600 block of Sausalito Drive, near West Arkansas Lane and Little Road. Officers responded to a reported shooting around 10:30 p.m.
When police arrived, they found Riley unresponsive with an apparent gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to investigators, Riley and several other juveniles were handling a firearm at the time of the incident. Evidence suggests the teens were pointing the weapon at one another when it discharged, striking Riley.
A 15-year-old who fired the gun was taken into custody and charged with manslaughter. Due to his age, his identity has not been released.
Gun Taken From Locked Safe
As detectives worked to determine how the teens obtained the firearm, they uncovered a troubling detail. Authorities say the gun had been properly stored in a locked safe by its registered owner.
However, police believe 17-year-old Cameron Tantillo broke into the safe and removed the weapon without permission. He then allegedly brought the gun to the Sausalito Drive home.
Tantillo has now been charged with making a firearm accessible to a child resulting in death. He turned himself in to authorities on Wednesday.
Investigators confirmed that the gun’s owner cooperated fully and will not face charges.
