A devastating collision in Harlem on Thursday night claimed the life of one pedestrian and left another in critical condition after a vehicle plowed into multiple objects along a busy street.
The incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. on West 125th Street near Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard. Authorities say a red Hyundai Tucson struck two adult male pedestrians before crashing into an unoccupied NYPD vehicle and then slamming into a parked tractor-trailer.
Witnesses described a chaotic and frightening scene. One bystander recalled hearing what sounded like an explosion as the SUV barreled down the street. Debris from the crash reportedly scattered across the roadway, with fragments striking nearby parked cars. The witness said the entire event unfolded in what felt like slow motion, leaving them shaken and stunned.
Emergency responders rushed both victims to nearby hospitals. One man was transported to Harlem Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The second victim was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside but was later pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet released his identity, pending notification of family members.
Helmets and twisted metal were visible at the crash site as investigators worked to piece together what led to the deadly impact.
The 49-year-old driver was taken into custody at the scene. No charges have been filed so far, though officials indicated that alcohol may have played a role in the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
