A routine Friday afternoon turned frightening in Bronzeville when a crowded bus operated by the Chicago Transit Authority was caught in a burst of gunfire, leaving one woman injured and dozens of passengers shaken.
The incident unfolded around 3:50 p.m. near King Drive and Pershing Road, as the bus traveled along its route. According to Chicago Police Department, multiple shots were fired in the area, with at least two bullets piercing the bus. A 37-year-old woman was struck in the leg and rushed to University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was reported to be in good condition.
At the time of the shooting, the bus was carrying an estimated 40 to 60 passengers, many believed to be students. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with people scrambling for safety as gunfire erupted.
Keith Hill of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 241 said the driver unknowingly entered what appeared to be crossfire. Surveillance footage from nearby homes captured the panic as passengers and bystanders ran for cover.
Local residents expressed growing concern over public safety, especially with violence spilling into everyday spaces like public transit. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage as they work to identify those responsible.
