An off-duty firefighter from Detroit is facing serious charges following a tragic crash that claimed the life of an 85-year-old woman in Roseville.
Authorities say 26-year-old Travis Turner was arraigned on charges of operating while intoxicated causing death and possession of a firearm while under the influence. The incident occurred on April 9 along Groesbeck Highway.
According to prosecutors, Turner was driving a 2016 Ford Fusion at a high rate of speed when he collided with a 2006 Saturn Ion. The driver of the Saturn, Eleanor Johnson, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was a resident of Oak Park and had been driving alone at the time.
Investigators allege Turner’s blood alcohol level was above the legal limit. He reportedly sustained minor injuries, while his girlfriend, who was also in the vehicle, was injured. Officials also confirmed that a firearm was found in Turner’s possession during the crash.
Turner has been granted a $100,000 bond, with strict conditions including GPS monitoring and an alcohol tether if released. The Detroit Fire Department confirmed he was off duty and driving his personal vehicle. He has since been placed on unpaid leave pending the investigation.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido emphasized the seriousness of impaired driving, stating that such decisions can have irreversible consequences.
Turner is expected back in court later this month as the case moves forward.
