Severe Storm Alert: Damaging Winds, Possible Tornado Risk in Southeast Michigan Tuesday Night

Residents across Southeast Michigan, including Detroit and surrounding metro areas, are being urged to stay alert as a significant severe weather threat is expected Tuesday night.

Meteorologists warn that a powerful system will bring unusually warm and humid air into the region, creating the perfect conditions for strong thunderstorms. While storms may begin developing west of the area earlier in the day, they are expected to organize into a fast-moving line and push into Southeast Michigan after sunset.

The primary concern is damaging straight-line winds, which could be strong enough to break tree branches and knock down power lines. There is also a low but real risk of brief tornadoes, especially within the advancing storm line. In addition, isolated storms ahead of the main system could produce hail, and heavy rainfall may lead to localized flooding in low-lying or urban areas.

The most dangerous window is expected between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., making this an overnight threat when many people are asleep.

Officials stress the importance of preparation. Residents should enable emergency alerts on their phones and keep devices on loud overnight. A NOAA weather radio can provide an added layer of safety. Before the storms arrive, secure outdoor items like patio furniture and trash bins to prevent them from becoming hazardous in strong winds.

It’s also recommended to identify a safe indoor location—such as a basement or interior room—away from windows in case warnings are issued.

Stay weather-aware and monitor updates as conditions evolve.
