Springville, Utah — A disturbing case out of Springville, Utah, has taken a serious turn after a 28-year-old man was arrested in connection with the disappearance of his mother and her friend, both now believed by police to be dead.
According to the Springville Police Department, Matthew Leonard initially reported his 50-year-old mother, Sarah Johnson, missing on March 26. However, as investigators began piecing together the timeline and examining evidence, suspicions quickly grew surrounding the circumstances of her disappearance.
Timeline of Disappearance Raises Concerns
Authorities say Johnson was last seen on the night of March 20 at her home in Springville. She was reportedly with John Handricks, also 50, who had separately been reported missing from Salt Lake City. As police followed leads and interviewed witnesses, it became increasingly clear that both individuals may have met with foul play.
Witness statements placed Leonard at the home with both missing individuals on the night they were last seen. One witness even reported hearing what sounded like gunshots coming from inside the residence that evening.
Investigation Uncovers Disturbing Evidence
On April 11, detectives executed a search warrant at the Springville home. What they found inside significantly escalated the case.
According to court documents, investigators discovered blood evidence, shell casings, and a bullet slug inside the home. In Johnson’s bedroom, blood was reportedly found deep within the grooves between the wooden floor planks. Authorities also noted the presence of large pools of blood against two separate walls in the same room.
Detectives believe there was an attempt to clean up the scene, further strengthening their suspicion that a violent incident had occurred inside the home. Based on the volume and placement of the blood evidence, investigators concluded that both Johnson and Handricks were likely killed, even though their bodies have not yet been located.
Suspect’s Prior Behavior Under Scrutiny
Court records reveal that Leonard had already been on law enforcement’s radar prior to the disappearance. Earlier in March, he was arrested and charged with electronic communication harassment after repeatedly contacting his girlfriend despite being told to stop.
Police say he sent multiple messages and made numerous calls within a short period, some of which included threats of self-harm. His behavior reportedly became increasingly erratic, leading his girlfriend to file a protective order against him on March 13.
Arrest and Charges
Leonard was taken into custody on April 11 and is currently being held at the Utah County Jail without bail. Prosecutors are preparing to charge him with two counts of aggravated murder.
In addition to the murder charges, Leonard is also facing several other allegations, including drug-related offenses, possession of a dangerous weapon, and obstruction of justice.
