Cold Weather Returns With Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories Across Region

New York City, NY — A sharp shift in weather is moving into the New York City area this week, bringing back colder, March-like conditions along with sub-freezing temperatures in surrounding suburbs. The change follows a cold front that pushed through on Sunday, delivering rain before ushering in a much chillier air mass.

By Sunday night, temperatures are expected to drop significantly. Areas outside New York City will see lows fall into the 30s, while the city itself will hover in the low 40s. In many suburban locations, conditions will be cold enough for frost formation and even below-freezing temperatures, raising concerns for early-season plants and sensitive vegetation.

Weather officials have issued alerts to highlight the risk. A Freeze Warning is in effect for Sussex County from midnight to 8 a.m. Monday, signaling temperatures cold enough to potentially damage crops and outdoor plants. At the same time, a Frost Advisory covers several counties including Suffolk, coastal Fairfield, Westchester, Rockland, Bergen, Passaic, Morris, Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren during those early morning hours.

Monday’s weather will offer a mix of sun and clouds, but the chill will remain noticeable throughout the day. A few isolated showers could develop, and in areas far north and west of the city, a brief mix of snowflakes is possible. However, no significant accumulation is expected.

Despite daytime highs reaching the low to mid-50s, gusty winds up to 25 mph will make it feel much colder—closer to the 40s for much of the day. The breeze will add to the overall discomfort, especially during morning and evening hours.

Another push of cold air is expected Monday night, reinforcing the chilly pattern and setting up a wintry feel for Tuesday morning. Residents across the region are advised to dress in layers, protect outdoor plants, and stay updated on changing conditions as temperatures continue to fluctuate.

The return of colder weather serves as a reminder that even in spring, winter-like conditions can quickly make a comeback across the Northeast.
