A chaotic morning in the Minneapolis area ended with one suspect doing the backstroke across a residential pond — and police waiting for him on the other side.
It started around 7:20 a.m. Thursday when Bloomington police received two back-to-back calls — one about a stolen vehicle and another about an attempted home burglary near 97th Street. Officers quickly spotted the stolen car, but the driver refused to stop.
The suspect then crashed into another vehicle near 98th Street and Lyndale Avenue — and instead of giving up, jumped into a second stolen black SUV and took off again.
The chase continued until the second vehicle lost control and crashed near Interstate 394 and Highway 100 in Golden Valley. Minnesota DOT traffic cameras captured two people fleeing the scene on foot — straight into a residential neighborhood.
That’s when things got truly unbelievable.
A nearby resident, Jeffrey Held, said he heard tires squealing and looked out his window — only to find a man swimming across his backyard pond.
“He was doing the backstroke but he was extremely tired by the time he got to the opposite shore — and the police were waiting for him,” Held said.
The exhausted suspect surrendered the moment he climbed out of the water. The second suspect was tracked down with the help of a K-9 unit.
Both men — aged 27 and 20, both from Minneapolis — were taken into custody and transported to a hospital for injuries sustained during the chase…
