Chicago, Illinois — A shocking act of violence inside a Chicago hospital has left one police officer dead and another fighting for his life, turning what began as a routine custody situation into a tragedy that has shaken the city.
Authorities say the incident unfolded over the weekend when 26-year-old Alphanso Tally, who had been arrested in connection with an armed robbery, was taken to Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital for medical treatment. According to officials, he was under police escort and had been screened with a metal detection wand upon arrival.
Despite those precautions, investigators say Tally somehow obtained a firearm while inside the emergency department. Moments later, gunfire erupted.
Two officers accompanying him were struck. Both were quickly transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, located a few miles away. Tragically, one officer—a 38-year-old with 10 years of service—was pronounced dead. The second officer, 57, who has served 21 years, remains in critical condition.
Following the shooting, police say Tally fled the hospital and entered a nearby residential neighborhood. SWAT teams and officers surrounded a private home where he had taken refuge. He was later taken into custody without further incident. Authorities also confirmed that a third weapon was recovered during the arrest.
Tally now faces 20 felony charges, including first-degree murder and attempted murder. It remains unclear whether he has secured legal representation.
Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling addressed the public, calling the charges “the first step in accountability,” while acknowledging the deep pain caused by the incident. He described the shooting as a “heartbreaking reminder” of the risks officers face every day.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also responded, calling the incident a tragedy and expressing gratitude to officers who continue to serve despite the dangers.
Investigators have not yet disclosed how the suspect was able to obtain a weapon inside the hospital, and that question remains central to the ongoing investigation.
For now, a city mourns the loss of a dedicated officer while hoping for the recovery of another—both of whom were simply doing their duty when the situation turned deadly.
