Maple Park, Illinois — A tense police pursuit in DeKalb County ended in tragedy Monday afternoon when a driver was shot and killed following an exchange of gunfire on Interstate 88 near Maple Park.
According to authorities, the incident began around 3:12 p.m. when a Naperville Police Department officer identified a vehicle connected to a missing person case. Officials said the individual involved was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis, adding urgency and complexity to the situation.
As officers attempted to engage, the driver allegedly displayed a firearm and fled. The vehicle was later located by the Warrenville Police Department, which initiated a pursuit. During the chase, the driver continued to brandish the weapon, escalating the risk for officers and the public.
The pursuit moved onto westbound I-88, where Illinois State Police joined the operation. Authorities deployed spike strips as the vehicle entered DeKalb County, successfully bringing it to a stop near Keslinger Road.
What followed was a confrontation that turned deadly. Officials confirmed that both the driver and a Warrenville police officer fired shots. The driver sustained a gunshot wound during the exchange.
Officers on the scene immediately provided life-saving aid before the individual was transported to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, the driver was later pronounced dead. No officers were reported injured.
The westbound lanes of I-88 remained closed for several hours as investigators worked the scene, causing significant traffic disruptions.
Investigations are now underway to determine the full sequence of events. Special agents from the Illinois State Police Division of Internal Investigation are reviewing ISP’s involvement, while the Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 1 is examining the use of force by the Warrenville officer.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the driver, and further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
