Portland, Oregon – A routine flight turned into an unforgettable moment when a passenger gave birth to a baby girl just minutes before landing at Portland International Airport on Friday night.
The incident happened aboard a Delta Air Lines flight traveling from Atlanta to Portland. What began as a normal journey quickly turned urgent when Ashley Blair, a passenger from Tennessee, went into labor about 30 minutes before the plane’s scheduled landing.
What happened mid-flight
With contractions getting closer, the situation escalated quickly inside the cabin. Two paramedics on board—Tina Fritz and Kaarin Powell—stepped in to assist after being alerted by flight attendants.
The flight was full, carrying 153 passengers. Crew members had to quickly clear space around Blair so the delivery could happen safely.
Without proper medical equipment available, the paramedics had to improvise. Passengers offered blankets, and a shoelace was used to tie the umbilical cord. Despite the challenges, the team worked calmly under pressure as the plane prepared to land.
Moments before landing
As the aircraft approached the runway, flight attendants asked everyone—including the paramedics—to take their seats. But at that exact moment, the baby was ready to be delivered.
Blair pushed just a few times, and within moments, a healthy baby girl was born. The timing was incredibly tight—the plane touched down almost immediately after the delivery.
A healthy arrival
The newborn, named Brielle Renee Blair, weighed about 5.5 pounds and arrived roughly two weeks earlier than expected. According to those present, the baby began breathing and crying right away, a reassuring sign for everyone onboard.
After landing, emergency responders from Portland Airport Fire & Rescue boarded the aircraft. Both mother and baby were found to be stable and were later transported to a nearby hospital for routine observation.
Confusion over medical help
In a statement, Delta said a doctor and nurses assisted during the incident. However, one of the paramedics later clarified that there was no doctor involved, and the only nurse on board was attending another passenger at the time.
A moment passengers won’t forget
What could have been a stressful emergency turned into a moment of relief and celebration. Passengers reportedly took photos and congratulated the new mother after the plane safely reached the gate.
For the paramedics who helped deliver the baby, the experience was deeply personal. One of them later shared that staying in touch with the mother has created a lasting bond.
A rare but powerful reminder
Mid-air births are extremely rare, but this incident highlights how quickly emergencies can unfold—and how strangers can come together to help in critical moments.
Thanks to quick thinking, teamwork, and calm execution, both mother and child are doing well—turning a high-pressure situation into a story with a happy ending.
