Randolph, Massachusetts — A disturbing incident unfolded Tuesday morning near the Canton–Randolph town line when a parent allegedly assaulted a school bus driver while students were on board, leaving families shaken and prompting a swift police response.
According to officials, the situation began around a routine pickup at the Avalon Complex, where a verbal disagreement between a parent and the driver quickly escalated. Authorities say the parent wanted his child to board the bus at an unscheduled stop, but the driver refused, citing company safety policies. What started as a disagreement soon turned physical.
Police allege that the parent, later identified as 31-year-old Aaron Jamahl Whitehead of Fall River, blocked the bus with his vehicle and continued following it to another stop on Avalon Drive. There, investigators say he confronted the 65-year-old driver and struck him multiple times. The suspect is also accused of grabbing the driver’s cellphone and throwing it before fleeing the scene.
Emergency crews arrived shortly before 8:30 a.m. and found the driver injured. He received medical attention at the scene from the Randolph Fire Department before being transported to a nearby hospital. His injuries were not described as life-threatening, but officials noted the seriousness of the situation given the presence of young students.
Although no students were physically harmed, many witnessed the altercation, leaving them frightened and confused. Parents gathered at the scene described the emotional impact on their children, with some saying their kids were visibly shaken after seeing the incident unfold.
School officials quickly shifted focus to student safety and emotional well-being. Resource officers accompanied students for the remainder of their journey to Hansen Elementary School, and counselors were made available upon arrival to provide immediate support. The school administration also reached out directly to affected families.
Law enforcement agencies worked together to identify and locate the suspect. Whitehead was arrested Wednesday evening in Stoughton and now faces multiple charges, including assault and battery on a person over 60, witness intimidation, malicious destruction of property, and disorderly conduct. He is expected to be arraigned in Quincy District Court.
Randolph Police Chief Anthony Marag condemned the incident, emphasizing that violence against school staff will not be tolerated. He also acknowledged the coordination between local departments that led to the arrest.
In response, school officials say additional precautions are being taken. Administrators and staff will be present on the bus in the coming days, and the district is working closely with local police to ensure student safety moving forward.
