A deadly multi-vehicle crash shut down northbound Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore Tuesday afternoon, leaving one person dead and four others injured, authorities confirmed.
The collision occurred at approximately 3:55 p.m. in the northbound lanes just north of Main Street. Investigators say the crash began when a 32-year-old Perris man driving a 2016 Toyota Tacoma rear-ended a 2023 Kia Niro operated by a 37-year-old woman from San Diego. The initial impact triggered a violent chain reaction that quickly spread across multiple lanes of traffic.
According to officials, the Kia veered into an adjacent lane after being struck and was then hit by a 2022 Dodge Ram 5500 towing a trailer. The truck was driven by a 50-year-old man from Los Angeles. Following that impact, the Dodge continued moving right and collided with the rear of a 2021 Toyota Highlander driven by a 69-year-old Lake Elsinore resident. The truck then struck a Honda Accord driven by a 38-year-old woman from Murrieta before finally coming to a stop.
Emergency crews responded within minutes and found debris scattered across all northbound lanes. Paramedics provided immediate medical attention at the scene. The San Diego woman driving the Kia was pronounced dead. Her identity has not yet been publicly released pending notification of family members.
The drivers of the Toyota Tacoma and Toyota Highlander were transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. The remaining two drivers were treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization.
Due to the severity of the crash and the extensive wreckage blocking the freeway, authorities issued a SigAlert at approximately 4:05 p.m., closing all northbound lanes. Traffic was heavily impacted for several hours as investigators worked to document the scene and crews cleared damaged vehicles and debris. The alert was expected to remain in effect until at least 7 p.m., causing significant delays during the evening commute.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances that led to the initial rear-end collision. At this time, it is unclear whether speed, distraction, or other factors played a role in the crash. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has additional information is urged to contact the investigating office.
The incident serves as a reminder of how quickly freeway crashes can escalate into major, multi-vehicle collisions, especially during peak travel hours. Authorities continue to encourage drivers to maintain safe following distances, remain alert, and exercise caution in heavy traffic conditions.
