A heartbreaking incident in Newark has left a family grieving after a delivery driver lost his life while trying to stop his own car from being stolen.

According to authorities, Jhon Aponte Alarcon, 46, was working during the afternoon when he briefly stepped away from his vehicle to deliver a package. Police say he had left the car running—something many delivery workers do to save time.

In that moment, a teenage suspect allegedly jumped into the vehicle and began driving away.

Realizing what was happening, Alarcon rushed back and held onto the moving car in an attempt to stop the theft. The situation quickly turned tragic when the suspect crashed into a parked vehicle. The impact caused the car to flip, fatally crushing Alarcon.

Authorities confirmed that the teen fled the scene but was later arrested and is now facing serious charges, including murder, carjacking, and vehicular homicide. Due to the suspect’s age, his identity has not been released.

Alarcon’s family says the loss has been overwhelming. His son described him as a hardworking father who was simply trying to provide for his family. What began as a routine workday turned into an unimaginable tragedy.

The case is now under investigation, and officials are urging anyone with information to come forward.
