Tampa, Florida Weather Alert: Severe Storms Expected 2 p.m.–9 p.m., Travel Disruptions Likely on I-75 and U.S. 19

TAMPA, Florida — A fast-moving line of strong to severe thunderstorms is expected to sweep across west-central Florida this afternoon and evening, creating dangerous travel conditions and potential damage across the region.

The storms are forecast to begin developing around 2 p.m., with the most intense activity expected between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Cities including Tampa, St. Petersburg, Brooksville, Lakeland, and Sarasota are all in the path of this system, with coastal and Nature Coast areas facing the highest risk.

Weather officials warn that wind gusts could reach up to 60 mph, strong enough to knock down trees and power lines. Some storm cells may also produce large hail and isolated tornadoes, especially during peak intensity hours late in the afternoon.

Along major routes such as I-75, I-275, and U.S. 19, heavy rain could quickly reduce visibility and create hazardous driving conditions. Water may begin pooling on roadways within minutes during intense downpours, particularly in low-lying intersections, underpasses, and coastal roads in Tampa and St. Petersburg. This raises the risk of accidents during the evening commute.

The storm system is being fueled by a combination of warm, unstable air and an approaching weather boundary, a setup that often leads to rapidly intensifying storms across the Florida peninsula.

Residents are being urged to take precautions ahead of the storms. Outdoor items that could be blown away should be secured, and unnecessary travel during heavy rain should be avoided. If thunder is heard or lightning is seen, moving indoors immediately is strongly advised.

The most critical window for severe weather remains between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., when damaging winds, localized flooding, and isolated tornado activity are most likely. Authorities say conditions may change quickly, and people should stay alert as the situation develops through the evening.
