Two brothers drove to their sister’s apartment just to make sure she was okay. They never made it back out alive.
Miami police say 31-year-old Antwan Carter opened fire inside the apartment at 5329 NW 17th Street in the early hours of Saturday morning — killing both men, who were in their 20s, in a hail of five gunshots.
“I woke from a dead sleep — five gunshots, pow pow pow pow pow — and then the door slammed underneath my balcony.”— Gina Kirk, neighbor
Investigators say the brothers had gone to check on their sister — Carter’s girlfriend — and got into a confrontation with him. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene; the other later died at the hospital.
When officers arrived, Carter was found standing outside the building. He made no attempt to flee. Instead, he reportedly told police those chilling words: “I am the one.” A gun was recovered from his pocket.
At Monday’s bond hearing, Judge Mindy Glazer denied bail. “There’s probable cause for the charges. It looks like he shot and killed his girlfriend’s two brothers,” she said, ordering Carter held without bond.
Carter now faces two counts of first-degree murder. Police also note he has a prior history of domestic violence.
