Houston's heat is climbing toward 91°F this week — here is what to expect before storms return

HOUSTON, Texas — If you stepped outside this week and felt like the heat arrived early, you are not wrong.

Houston is heading into a stretch of hot, sunny days with temperatures climbing as high as 91 degrees — and the humidity is not letting up either.

Here is a full breakdown of what to expect across the Houston metro area from May 13 through May 20.

Wednesday brings peak heat with sunny skies

According to the National Weather Service, Wednesday will be the hottest day of the stretch.

Expect sunny skies and a high near 91 degrees across southeast Texas. Winds will stay relatively light through the afternoon, but the combination of heat and rising humidity will make it feel warmer than the thermometer shows.

Wednesday night stays mostly clear with an overnight low near 70 degrees — warm for mid-May.

Thursday and Friday stay hot but slightly cooler

Thursday brings another sunny and dry day with a high around 90 degrees. Light south winds will develop during the afternoon, pulling in more Gulf moisture.

Friday stays mostly sunny with a high near 88 degrees. While temperatures back off slightly, increasing humidity will keep conditions uncomfortable — especially overnight, when lows stay in the lower-to-mid 70s.

Weekend offers a brief break before clouds build

Saturday is partly sunny with a high around 86 degrees — the coolest afternoon of the week, though still well above average for this time of year.

Cloud cover begins increasing Sunday as Gulf moisture deepens across the region. Sunday’s high sits near 87 degrees under mostly cloudy skies.

Storm chances return early next week

The dry stretch does not last.

A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms develops Monday before rain chances increase further on Tuesday across the Houston area. Residents who have been waiting on relief from the heat may finally get it — along with the storms that typically come with it.

Air quality alert remains in effect

An air quality alert is currently in effect for portions of southeast Texas.

Sensitive groups — including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions — are encouraged to limit prolonged outdoor activity during periods of elevated pollution. If you do need to be outside, early morning hours typically offer better air quality before heat builds through the day.
