A Pennsylvania jury took just three hours to find Lauren Maloberti, 36, guilty of third-degree murder in the death of her adopted 5-year-old son, Landon — a case that shocked the region and raised urgent questions about child protective systems.
“I just got done beating your son.” — Text allegedly sent by Lauren Maloberti to her husband, July 2022
Landon was rushed unconscious to a Pittsburgh-area hospital on January 30, 2023. He died about a week later. Doctors found a catastrophic brain injury and more than 100 separate injuries across his small body. The cause of death: blunt-force trauma.
During trial, both Lauren and her husband Jacob, 46, pointed fingers at each other. Lauren claimed Jacob had raped and emotionally controlled her, and that he beat Landon behind a locked bathroom door that morning before stopping her from calling for help.
Jacob, meanwhile, testified he had no idea his wife had harmed their son. “The person I thought I was married to, I lost complete trust in,” he said on the stand.
But the damning text — sent six months before Landon’s death — told a different story. Prosecutors argued it proved a pattern of abuse, not a single incident.
Lauren was found guilty on all major counts: third-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and conspiracy. Her attorney says they will appeal.
Jacob Maloberti, charged with criminal homicide and related counts, has a disposition hearing scheduled for May 22. His trial will be the next chapter in a case that has gripped Westmoreland County.
