A 79-year-old South Carolina man is facing serious criminal charges after authorities say he shot his grandson during a confrontation at his home.
Larry Brown was arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime following a reported shooting at his residence in Richland County. According to law enforcement officials, deputies responded to the home around noon on Tuesday after receiving reports of gunfire.
When officers arrived, they found Brown’s grandson suffering from a gunshot wound to the hip. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he underwent surgery. Officials later confirmed he has since been released but is not permitted to return to the property.
Investigators say Brown was detained close to the scene while allegedly attempting to leave the area. Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from an argument between the two.
During a bond hearing on Wednesday, Brown’s attorney, Dick Harpootlian, argued that the details of the incident remain unclear. He described the situation as conflicting accounts and suggested that whether the charges are appropriate will ultimately be decided in court.
The defense presented an alternative version of events, stating that a dog on the property allegedly became aggressive toward Brown. According to the attorney, Brown may have been attempting to shoot the animal but accidentally struck his grandson instead.
Harpootlian also told the court that Brown had been providing housing and employment to his grandson after his release from prison in another state, suggesting there was no motive for intentional harm.
Concerns about Brown’s health were also raised during the hearing. His attorney noted that Brown has experienced ongoing physical and possible cognitive issues following a severe car accident five years ago. He reportedly uses a wheelchair or cane and may require a mental health evaluation.
At the conclusion of the hearing, the judge granted Brown bond under specific conditions. He is prohibited from possessing any firearms and must undergo a mental health assessment.
Brown is scheduled to appear in circuit court in May. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
