A 40-Year Desert Pit Stop Is Closing for Good — and Thousands of I-10 Drivers Have Until May 31 to Say Goodbye

The Dairy Queen at Picacho Peak — a fixture for every Phoenix-to-Tucson road trip — is shutting its doors. Here’s why, and what comes next at Exit 219.

If you have ever driven the long, scorched stretch of Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Tucson, there is a good chance you know Exit 219. It is where the Dairy Queen at Picacho Peak has stood for more than 40 years — an unofficial checkpoint for road-trippers, long-haul truckers, and families pulling off for a Blizzard before the next 80 miles of desert. That landmark is closing permanently on May 31, 2026.

“We are deeply grateful for the overwhelming support and loyalty shown by our customers over the past 40-plus years.” — Valkyrie Musarra, COO, Bowlin Travel Centers

Bowlin Travel Centers, which operates the location as part of a network of highway stops across Arizona and New Mexico, confirmed the closure in a press release. The company said it was unable to reach an agreement with the Arizona State Land Department on lease terms for the parcel, making the shutdown unavoidable.

Why the closure hits harder than most

This is not just an ice cream counter going dark. The Picacho Peak stop is one of the few full-service options along a corridor that offers very little between the two cities. Visitors headed to Picacho Peak State Park — best known for its dramatic wildflower blooms each spring — also relied on the DQ as their quickest option for fuel, food, and restrooms in one stop. Exit guides and travel apps list it as the primary quick-service choice at the interchange.

What comes next at Exit 219

Bowlin says it is not abandoning the plaza. The company has promised to announce a new food concept for the adjacent Picacho Peak Plaza “in the coming weeks,” and local news outlet KGUN9 confirmed that Bowlin plans to release details on a replacement soon. No operator has been named yet, and no opening date has been set — so until that announcement comes, travelers will be watching Exit 219 closely.

A farewell window is still open

Bowlin is treating the final weeks as a farewell run, encouraging regulars to stop by and share memories before the grill goes dark. If you have been putting off that last Blizzard, the window is real: the doors close May 31 at 8 p.m., and this time, they will not reopen.
