CANTON, Michigan — A morning that started like any other ended in tragedy Wednesday when a car slammed into Canton City Market just after 7 a.m., killing the driver and sending his teenage son to the hospital.

The crash happened at the intersection of Sheldon Road and Sheldon Center — a corner neighbors say rarely sees serious accidents.

When Canton Police arrived, they found the driver, a 44-year-old father from Canton, dead at the scene. The impact left significant damage to the front of the building.

His Son Was in the Passenger Seat

The man’s teenage son was riding with him at the time of the crash.

Officers say the boy was taken to a nearby hospital and is currently listed in stable condition. His exact age has not been released.

The two were alone in the vehicle. No other injuries were reported.

“That’s Exactly Where We Would Have Been”

The timing of the crash is something Canton City Market Manager Sydney Berger cannot stop thinking about.

The car hit the building minutes before the market was set to open for the day.

“No one was in. It was before we opened. That’s exactly where we would have been. We would have gotten hit. Our cars would have been smashed,” Berger said.

She saw the white sheet covering the driver when she arrived.

“Losing a loved one like that is just brutal,” she said.

A Corner That Rarely Sees This Kind of Tragedy

Nearby business owner Kevin Kelly was shaken by what he witnessed.

“It’s tragic. It’s typically not a corner we have a lot of accidents, so definitely unusual,” Kelly said. “I’m not sure it could get much worse — tragic all the way around.”

For many in the community, the crash has left a quiet but heavy feeling hanging over the area.

Investigation Is Underway

The Canton Police Department’s Accident Investigation Team has taken over the case.

Authorities have not yet released information on what caused the driver to lose control and strike the building. No other vehicles appear to have been involved.

The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to be released as the review continues.

A father left home Wednesday morning with his son beside him and never made it back. The community is left searching for answers — and holding its breath for the family he left behind.
