A Police Dog Helped Catch a Bank Robbery Suspect Who Led Officers on a Chase — Here's What Happened

A man suspected of robbing a bank on Indianapolis’s northeast side Wednesday afternoon was taken into custody after a police chase and a K-9 takedown, authorities said.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a robbery in progress just before 2:50 p.m. at a BMO Bank branch at 7652 N. Shadeland Ave. — located just east of the I-69 and I-465 interchange — after bank staff reported a male had robbed the location and fled in a vehicle.

Officers quickly located the suspect and a chase began. It ended near the intersection of 96th Street and Hague Road, on the Fishers-Indianapolis border — roughly three miles north of the bank and just east of the I-69 interchange at 96th Street.

When officers ordered the man to exit the vehicle, he refused. That’s when an IMPD police dog stepped in. The canine bit the suspect during the apprehension, and he was transported to a hospital in stable condition.

The Fishers Police Department assisted IMPD in taking the suspect into custody. The FBI has also been notified of the robbery, IMPD said.

No additional details about the suspect or the amount taken from the bank have been released at this time.
