Berks County in Mourning — 2 Firefighters Die in Tragic Route 222 Crash

A Pennsylvania community is grieving after a tragic crash claimed the lives of two dedicated firefighters who were serving in the line of duty.

The Walnuttown Fire and Rescue confirmed that Fire Chief Jeff Buck, 60, and Assistant Fire Chief Robert Shick died on April 4 while assisting in a search operation in Berks County.

According to the Berks County Coroner’s Office, the two men were traveling in a utility vehicle along Route 222 in Richmond Township when a southbound sedan struck them head-on. Both were rushed to nearby hospitals but later died from their injuries.

Authorities said the individuals in the sedan fled the scene but were later apprehended. The driver is now in custody as the investigation continues.

The firefighters had been actively searching for a missing woman at the time. Officials later confirmed that the search was successful, adding a bittersweet note to an already heartbreaking loss.

Lt. Ryan Tyson described the fallen chiefs as individuals who “gave everything they had,” emphasizing their unwavering commitment to serving others. The department has temporarily suspended operations as members cope with the loss.

Tributes have poured in from across the firefighting community, honoring the courage, leadership, and sacrifice of both men. Their service, colleagues say, went far beyond duty—it was a calling.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days as the community prepares to say its final goodbyes.
