California Prison Attack Case: Man Convicted After Brutal Killing of Wheelchair-Bound Inmate

California — A disturbing chain of violent events has come to light after a California man was convicted of a brutal prison killing, following an earlier attempt to take his own father’s life in a separate incident.

According to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office, 33-year-old Miguel Espino was found guilty of premeditated murder in connection with the killing of 38-year-old Michael Spengler inside Salinas Valley State Prison.

What Happened Inside the Prison

The fatal attack occurred on August 19, 2024, in a prison recreational yard. Prosecutors said Espino used an improvised weapon to stab Spengler, who was confined to a wheelchair, a total of 42 times.

Officials described the incident as extremely violent, highlighting the level of brutality involved. Authorities stated the attack appeared sudden and left little chance for the victim to defend himself.

A Violent Past Leading Up to the Crime

Court records reveal this was not Espino’s first serious offense. He had previously been convicted of attempted murder after attacking his father in 2018 in Riverside County.

During that incident, Espino allegedly used a hammer and a rock to assault his father, leaving him unconscious. He then set fire to the mobile home while his father was still inside. Neighbors reportedly intervened and rescued the victim from the burning home.

Investigators later found evidence, including recorded jail calls, indicating Espino had admitted to the attack despite initially denying involvement.

Pattern of Escalating Violence

Authorities noted Espino had a history of aggressive behavior and repeated violent outbursts. Prosecutors argued that both incidents—the attack on his father and the prison killing—demonstrated a pattern of sudden, extreme violence.

The victim in the prison case, Spengler, was already serving a life sentence for two separate murders committed in Los Angeles County.

What Happens Next

Espino now faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life behind bars. Prosecutors confirmed that any new sentence will be added to his existing term related to the attempted murder of his father.

As of now, officials have not publicly announced the sentencing date.

A Case That Raises Larger Concerns

The case has drawn attention to issues surrounding prison safety, mental health, and repeated violent offenses. While authorities continue to focus on legal proceedings, the incidents leave behind a trail of trauma for victims and families involved.

Officials say further updates, including sentencing details, will be released once available.
